Q: One visitor asked, "After my floors get the final coat of polyurethane,

how long do I have to wait before I can put back my area carpets and my furniture?"

A: Most polyurethane finishes are dry enough to walk on in 12 hours in a hot and low humidity day. Cold day may take longer. We recommend waiting a day before the floor is used and not to walk at all between coats.

Q: One visitor asked, "We want to put down the wide pine board planks in our living room.

The regular boards, not tongue and groove. What can I put in between the boards so stuff won't fall in the cracks?

We just want that old time flooring look with the cracks. We just cannot afford tongue and groove."

A: You could have the floor sanded and filled with a latex filler. The filler will stay in as long as there is no movement between the boards.

Pine, as you know, is very soft and will mark easily.  It is also subject to extreme shrinkage, and you will need to have it in your house and well dried and acclimated before you install it. I hope that helps.

Q: One visitor asked, "We recently purchased a new house. We had the builder install our hardwood floors . The floor was installed right out of the box the night before we moved into our house?? The installation job was absolutely awful. I've been reading your blogs and articles. Is it not true that the wood  should have sat in the house for a week??"

A:  I try to tell people that success cannot be rushed! You must let the wood acclimatize to the environment.

Q: One visitor asked, "I have a 70 lb. dog and I want to put hardwood in my family room. What type of wood should I use?"

A: I would suggest any hardwood with high hardness because (Janka number 1000 and up), however the finish will scratch if heavy or sharp objects are dragged on it. Prevention is the key. Keeping the dog claws well trimmed and filed so they are not sharp and attaching a felt pad to furniture legs will definitely prevent scratches.

Q. One visitor asked, Can we install solid hardwood flooring in the basement?

A. It is highly recommended that you do not install solid hardwood flooring below grade. The expansion and contraction are too extreme. We recommend installing a high quality engineered hardwood floors below grade. We also recommend to consider any type of floating floor, which allow the subfloor to stay dry.

Q.  One visitor asked, Can I apply a wax finish to my prefinished floors?

A. No. You should never apply wax finish to your surface type finishes.

Q. One visitor asked, The floor beneath my rug is lighter than the exposed floor, what can I do?

A. It is normal for some hardwood floors finishes to darken when exposed to sunlight over an extended period of time. To eliminate the obvious tone differences, it is best to shade the windows to block sun exposure. Any differences in light exposure will eventually create this effect in some finishes.

Q. One visitor asked, Can I expect my floor to have color variations?

A. All hardwood flooring have natural color variations in the wood. Usually "Select and Better" grades , which are cut from the center of the tree, are mostly uniform, and lower grades of flooring will have a larger number of character blemishes. However, you can expect some color variations in all grades.

Q. One visitor asked, What is the difference between engineered wood and solid wood flooring?

A. Engineered wood flooring – available in planks or strips – is manufactured by using a cross-directional laminated construction in 3 to 5 layers of wood; only the top layer is real hardwood. Because of its construction, these products don’t expand and contract with the seasons temperature and humidity changes as much as solid wood products do.

Q. One visitor asked, Which installation method is best?

A. There are four main installation methods: nail, staple, glue, and floating. The best method depends on the selected product, location, and subfloor. Call us Toll free: 888-844-6624 for a free in home consultation.
